Actually, the internet existed a long time before that, with Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn publishing a paper on what would become TCP/IP in 1974. But yes, Tim Berners-Lee, I mean, SIR Tim Berners-Lee is the guy that invented HTTP.

Actually, the coding of the protocol isn’t as key for me as formulating the theory. He seems to be the guy who first pointed out that our information should be organized loosely in a network format, instead of according to a static hierarchy.

Actually, Douglas Englebart is one of the first guys to come up with the idea of hyperlinked documents, as early as the 1960’s. Englebart has received the ACM Turing Award for this, as well as for inventing the mouse. But Berners-Lee still deserves a ton of credit for putting together the idea of linked information with the idea of a protocol for sharing this linked information to remote locations.
